February News Letter 2013
Now that Spring is here we all have new and exciting things to explore.
We discussed St. Bridget’s Day and made a St. Bridget’s cross and read a story of St. Bridget.
This was followed by St. Valentine’s Day, a day when we share and be kind to our friends. The children enjoyed making their Valentine’s hearts for their parents.
Our next celebration was pancake Tuesday, all the children helped to mix and make pancakes, which were eaten for snack. They also enjoyed making their pancake faces, which enhances learning about parts of the face. We also sang the pancake song.
In Circle time, we talked about Spring and new life. We talked about new born animals, and the plants coming to life. We looked at the beautiful spring flowers and grew our hyacinth and narcissus plants, one in water and one in clay.
We introduced two new stories which encourage the children to keep safe when crossing the road. Firstly we used the Simon Story to reinforce the concept of “holding hands “with the adult. Then we used the Josie story to teach the children to “Look and Listen” before they cross the road.
We introduced the sandpaper globe, eg. Land and water. This was followed by the continent globe which is colour coded. We also introduced the global puzzle of the continents. We learned the continent song ‘ Do you know your continents’. The children enjoyed working with the continent of Europe and the map of Ireland in puzzle form. You can encourage your child to sing the continent song for you.
We are continuing with our number work, one to ten. Some children have completed the spindle box which introduces sequence and gives a muscular feel for the numbers 1 to 9 and introduces 0. Others have been working on cards and counters which is a more abstract exercise. The children at this stage have internalised their concept of numbers. In language we continue to work on the phonics, sounds of the letters. The children are making great progress with their writing . In March we will explore word building. The children are also being introduced to new water exercises in Practical Life and Sensorial Materials.
Our work experience student Sarah is doing great work with the children. Rose has finished her work experience and we thank her for her work and wish her well with her studies. Sharon and Ruth are with us on Fridays. We studied the life-cycle of the butterfly and the children enjoyed the story of the ‘Hungry Caterpillar’ using varied props.
We introduced stories on emotions such as sad, happy, angry . Stories such as these help children to express their emotions. We also have completed Josie story on road safety,’ When you want to cross the road you stop and look’
Songs we did included The pirate song, Into school, stay safe songs,
Advance notice: we will have a parent’s evening in march, date yet to be decided. Parent Teacher meeting will take place on March 28th
